Call to Homecoming
It’s been yet another successful time for the actives in the 2004-2005 academic year. Every passing year brings new faces and new improvements to the Gamma Sigma experience. We were pleased to receive Chapter Excellence and the Scholarship Award from ATO National. This marks the 3rd consecutive year we’ve been recognized by National for our strong commitment to academics. We were also pleased to host national representatives, including Alpha Tau Omega’s CEO, Wynn Smiley, during our annual “Jump-A-Thon” as an ATO Roadshow “Host Chapter.” The event was extremely successful, and many actives participated in taped interviews with the National organization.
We’re pleased to announce a massive revamp of our website which can now be found directly at www.atogs.org. Thanks to Kyle Bradshaw ’03 for his major contributions to the site’s design. While the site is looking great, we’re still looking to improve a lot of the functionality, particularly with regards to alumni communication. Be sure to check the site out soon, as we’re hoping to provide alumni with a portal to our Gamma Sigma Intranet so everyone can stay in touch and up to date. For the actives, the intranet has been extremely helpful during Rush and in the general operations of the chapter so we’re all really excited about providing functionality for our alumni.
Our chapter continues to be an authority on campus. We had an extremely successful rush year, recruiting young men from the soccer, baseball, and hockey teams. With 23 bids signed and 22 new initiates, we’ve got a large sophomore class that makes their presence known in all aspects at WPI. We’re proud to announce that one of our pledges, Andy Anderson, won Greek Alumni Council’s New Member of the Year Award. This recognition goes to the best Greek man or woman who exemplifies great leadership ability and involvement on Campus. We’re also pleased to have Jamie Contonio’s (’00) brother, Ryan Smalanskas in our chapter house this year.
Our house managers, Jason Sansoucie and Tom Stevens, have done an excellent job in maintaining our old houses at 8 and 10 Regent. Last year, the actives repainted the front porch. We’re hoping to see new carpeting in the Carriage House in time for Homecoming and Rush. Also, Bob Holmes (‘00) and Chris Boylan (‘00) have been amazingly helpful in the restructuring of our front landscape.
Sweeping change continues at WPI with a new President, Vice President of Student Life, Police Chief, and Director of Greek Life Programs. With these drastic changes in staff, the Gamma Sigma actives as well as the entire Greek System are making significant efforts to promote Greek Life and its benefits to the campus.
We had our annual officer transition retreat in Montreal and everyone had a great time. Contrary to popular belief, it is possible for undergraduate men to get some things done in that city! In one of our more constructive sessions, a goal was set to involve alumni more in everything that we do. The actives need your help in reaching that goal! We hope to see you at homecoming and involved in other events we hold during the course of this academic year. If you’d like to come to dinner (Mon-Thurs @ 5:30 P.M.) or a house meeting (Sun. @ 9:00 P.M.) sometime, please don’t hesitate to give us a call so we can save a seat for you! The actives love to hear the stories and traditions of the past.
Love and Respect,
Dan Pickett
