A note from the President of ATO, Dan Pickett
Prospective rushers,
The Gamma Sigma Chapter of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity would like to welcome you to Fall Rush 2005! Rush can be a very exciting time of year and I hope you will take full advantage of it. You might be wondering: “What is Rush, anyway?” Rush is when fraternities recruit new members. If a student shows interest in a particular fraternity, the brothers may extend a bid to the student. A bid is a fraternity's way of inviting a student to become a member. Students can receive bids from more than one house, and are not under any obligation to accept any of them. Rush ends with Bid Night, when a student signs the bid of a fraternity he wishes to join and then he becomes a pledge. Bid Night will culminate after a month of Rush on December 2nd.
You may have a general idea of what fraternities are all about, or you may have absolutely no clue. Most Freshmen have mixed feelings about fraternities. Some guys know they definitely want to join a fraternity, some are undecided, and others are completely against fraternities and the Greek system.
The fraternities at WPI are a shining example of Greek Life. Many chapters are winners of their national awards, and consistently receive praise from the local WPI community because of their philanthropy and charity work. Greeks are among the most involved students on campus, excelling in sports, student activities, and academics. Going Greek at WPI means you’re going Greek with some of the best in the country!
Alpha Tau Omega is of no exception. ATO consistently receives recognition from our National Fraternity and the Campus Community alike. For the past three years, we have distinguished ourselves in the areas of academics, athletics, and leadership. For the past three years, we’ve received the National Excellence in Scholarship award due to our intellectual brotherhood and our commitment to striving for scholastic excellence. We’ve won two True Merit awards in the last three years, which is our National Fraternity’s highest honor. Become a brother at ATO and you’ll understand the significant pride we take in who we are and what we do.
Who I am today is because of ATO. Three years ago, I was a freshman unsure of whether a fraternity was the right place for me. After house tours, I got acquainted with the brothers, and I quickly realized I belonged here. In addition, the new friends I found inspired me to give back to the community and the University. I developed into a strong leader and a better person. It is because of my fraternity that I continue to attend WPI, and I’m so thankful that I have the privilege to show you how special Alpha Tau Omega is to me and to every ATO brother.
Why go ATO instead of somewhere else? Come up to the house and see for yourself! We reside in a restored Victorian mansion across Park Avenue at 10 Regent Street in one of Worcester’s most prominent neighborhoods.. We invite and encourage you to visit our beautiful historic house, and meet the members of our strong, tight-knit brotherhood.
We strive to excel academically, athletically, socially, and most of all fraternally. We take pride in the number of sports we represent, the campus activities we are involved in, and the community service we do every year. This year Gamma Sigma had a 3.1 chapter cumulative GPA. Quite a few brothers participate in Varsity Soccer, Varsity Baseball, Hockey, Student Government, and the Intrafraternity Council.
Please take a moment to view our list of our upcoming Rush 2005 events. You are welcome to come up any time for a meal. Lunch is at 11:30 and dinner is at 5:30. Or just swing by anytime to hang out and meet the brothers, play ping pong or video games, or do some homework. When you do visit, you'll recognize why ATO stands far above the rest.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I hope to see you soon
Sincerely,
Dan Pickett
ATO President
